She attended Fruitvale Elementary School, Oakland School for the Arts, and the Cal Shakes Conservatory Program.
She did not attend college, but she received an honorary degree from the Academy of Art University in 2020.

She has been romantically linked to her co-stars Tom Holland and Jacob Elordi in the past, but she has not confirmed any relationship publicly.
Her parents are Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu Coleman. Her father is African-American with Nigerian ancestry; her mother has German and Scottish ancestry.
Her grandparents are Phillip Hilary Stoermer and Daphne Carol Whitelaw on her mother's side, and Samuel David Coleman and Kaziah Ajamu on her father's side.
She has five older siblings: three sisters (Kaylee, AnnaBella, and Katieanna) and two brothers (Austin and Julien) from her father's previous marriage.

She began her career as a child model and backup dancer. She made her television debut as Rocky Blue on the Disney Channel sitcom Shake It Up (2010–2013) and starred as the titular character in the channel's sitcom K.C. Undercover (2015–2018).
She has also modeled for brands like CoverGirl, Tommy Hilfiger, Lancôme, and Valentino.
She has starred in several movies, such as Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and its sequels, The Greatest Showman (2017), Malcolm & Marie (2021), and Dune (2021).

Her most acclaimed role is as Rue Bennett, a struggling drug-addicted teenager, in the HBO teen drama series Euphoria. For this role, she became the youngest recipient of the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, which she won twice.
She has also ventured into music. She released her eponymous debut studio album in 2013, which featured the hit single "Replay". She also collaborated with Zac Efron on the song "Rewrite the Stars" from The Greatest Showman soundtrack in 2017. She has also written and performed several songs for Euphoria.
