He is the son of Sheri Rose Hauck, a teacher, and Gary Gerald Burrell, a family therapist.

He is of mainly English and German descent, along with smaller amounts of Scottish, Irish, and French ancestry.

He also has African ancestry through his maternal great-great-great-grandmother, who was a former slave.

He graduated from Southern Oregon University with a Bachelor's degree in theater arts in 1993.
